Biathlon scheduled for June 4 in Breese

Have you started training for the Kicks-n-Spokes Biathlon? HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese and the Athletes Advantage Sports Medicine program, in partnership with the Clinton County YMCA, will host the annual run/bike event starting at the HealthPlex Fitness Track on Sunday, June 4.

Packet pick-up is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. race day, on-site registration opens at 7 a.m., and the start is scheduled for 8 a.m. This is an open course – roads are not closed and all traffic signs must be obeyed. Due to the hospital surgery expansion project and construction safety concerns, no Kids Biathon will be held in 2017.

Each individual participant will run a three-mile flat and fast paved course, then jump on his or her bike for a 12-mile ride on even country roads. Team participants will divide the courses – one will run, then return to tag the other who will bike. Entrants must be 16 to enter the event as an individual. A child may team up with a parent, if the child runs and the parent bikes.

Early bird fees are $35/single or $50/team of two before May 18, and will guarantee a t-shirt in your selected size. For entries postmarked after May 18 or received the day of, fees are $45/single or $60/team.

Those participating will need to complete a registration form and sign a waiver of liability. Each participant should come race-ready with a safe bike, helmet and water. Helmets must be American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved and race numbers must be visible at all times. Parking is available in the hospital employee lot east of the hospital on Holy Cross Lane. Mechanical assistance and support vehicles are not allowed on the course. Participants must finish by 10:30 a.m. or will be picked up and brought back to the starting point.

Register online at https://racesonline.com/events/kicks-and-spokes-biathlon, download a registration form under the events tab at stjoebreese.com or pick up a form from the front desk at the hospital, HealthPlex, or Clinton County Rural Health offices in Breese, Carlyle, Germantown, Trenton and New Baden. Return completed forms with a check for payment to the HealthPlex, PO Box 99, Breese, IL 62230. Course maps will be posted on the hospital website closer to the event.
