Breese hospital Fall Health Fairs scheduled, forms available

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese will offer Health Fair screenings this fall in four communities, each from 6-10 a.m. Although walk-ins are welcome, preregistration is requested and speeds up the process for everyone.
Registration forms are available on the hospital website, www.stjoebreese.com, at the front desks of the hospital, HealthPlex, doctor offices, Immediate Care 365, Clinton County libraries, and in area newspapers. In order for your forms to be processed and your vial labels printed, a completed and signed (see bottom of form) Fall 2017 Health Fair form must be received at the hospital by 5 p.m. Wednesday, one week before the fair you plan to attend.

The screenings will take place from 6:00 to 10:00 a.m. the following Wednesdays: Sept. 13 at the Breese KC Hall, 480 N. Walnut; Sept. 27 at the Carlyle KC Hall, 1471 Fairfax; Oct. 11 at Trenton First United Methodist Church, 3324 Old US 50; and Oct. 25 at the Germantown American Legion, 1105 Sycamore.

Admission to the fair is free, along with several of the screenings. Other screenings are offered at greatly reduced fees. Each location will offer the same booths, screenings and charges. Usually, all scheduled blood samples can be pulled from a single, successful stick.

Blood tests to be offered include: a Comprehensive Blood Screening (CBS) for $45; hemoglobin A1C for $10; vitamin D screening for $15; and for men only, a Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) for $15.

The CBS requires a 10-hour fast, however, it is recommended that medication be taken. Please follow your doctor’s orders. To ensure hydration, you may also drink water during the fast. The CBS screens for anemia, infection and diabetes, and checks cholesterol levels, thyroid, liver and kidney function.

The A1C is for those with or at-risk for diabetes, and proper levels of Vitamin D are important for immune function, cancer prevention and osteoporosis treatment. Physicians use the PSA level, along with a physical exam, to screen for prostate cancer.

A noninvasive, pain-free heel screening for bone density will be offered for $5. This test can point out osteoporosis risk in men and women. When dressing for the Fair, please note that shoes and socks must be removed to receive an accurate result. It is not necessary to have this screening more than once every two years.

At-home colorectal screening kits will also be available for $1 per packet of three.

Health screenings to be provided at no cost include a blood pressure check, diabetes finger stick, body composition test to calculate your percentage of body fat, and pulmonary function and pulse oximetry tests to measure lung function.

Those attending may donate eyeglasses and hearing aids for the Lions, as well as wigs, hats and scarves for the hospital’s Cancer Care Closet. Refreshments will be offered after the blood draws, and the Auxiliary will have quilt raffle tickets.

Completed and signed registration forms may be dropped off at the hospital main lobby desk between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., faxed to 526-1404, mailed to: Health Fairs, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital, PO Box 99, Breese, IL 62230; or scanned and e-mailed to sjb.healthfair@hshs.org. Screening fees in the form of cash, one check per person made payable to St. Joseph’s Hospital, or credit card information may be included with the registration forms or paid at the Fair. Please do not send cash through the mail. If you miss the fair you scheduled to attend, your information folder, along with any payment, is automatically moved to the next Fall Health Fair until one is attended. – no need to register again or call the hospital. Payments will not be processed until a Fair is attended. Should you miss all the Fall Health Fairs, your prepaid fees will be returned. The hospital will not be responsible for billing insurance companies. Medicare does not reimburse these fees.

On-site registration the day of the event will also be available. Results will be mailed to the address supplied on the registration form as soon as they are processed, and will become part of your hospital medical record. Please allow two to three weeks for lab results to be processed and mailed. If you have not received your results within a month, or if you have any questions, please call the hospital at 526-5351 or sjb.healthfair@hshs.org.

Data from the screenings and/or lab tests requires correlation by a physician. The results do not constitute a diagnosis and participants are responsible for following up on any test results with their health care provider.

The HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese Fall Health Fairs are brought to you by Community Rx Sponsors Poettker Construction and Legacy Place, both of Breese.
