HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese will hold their semi-annual Children’s Car Seat Safety Check on Saturday, May 6, 2017. From 9 a.m. until 1 p.m., certified child passenger safety technicians will check infant and child car seats and booster seats for proper size and installation in the Colleague Parking Lot on the East side of the hospital. This lot is only accessible from Holy Cross Lane.
According to Safekids.org, “Of the 451 children ages 8 and under who died in motor vehicle crashes in 2014, 116 (26 percent) were not restrained by an age-appropriate device.”
Janice Gebke, a registered nurse and child seat specialist with the hospital’s Women and Infants Center, organizes these events at the hospital because she has seen what can happen first-hand through her experience as an EMT.
“The majority of units I review each spring and fall during these checks need adjustment to properly protect the child,” shares Gebke. “I use the checks as a chance to make necessary installation adjustments to protect kids, and I educate the adults so they can keep the seats safe. My intent is to save lives.”
Gebke asks that attendees bring their manuals to the event for both the seat and the vehicle if possible.
She points out that parents, grandparents and care providers should check seats for expiration, and replace seats that have been in a vehicle during an accident.
No registration is necessary to attend the May 6th car seat event. Call the hospital’s Women & Infants Center with questions at (618) 526-5423.
