Health care career students invited to apply for IHA and hospital Auxiliary grants

Students in or entering a health care career field are invited to apply for $1,000 scholarships offered by the Auxiliary at HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese and the Illinois Hospital Research and Educational Foundation (IHREF).

Both applications are available from the hospital’s Volunteer Services by contacting 526-5351 or judy.schrage@hshs.org. The Auxiliary application must be returned by May 1; the IHA application is due April 15.

Auxiliary grant applicants must be Clinton County residents and entering a medical or allied field. They must have already been accepted into their chosen program and provide an acceptance letter.

Students will only be eligible to receive a grant one time; there is no limit on the number of times a student may apply.

Schools must be appropriately accredited but need not be in Illinois and students must attend one academic year of school or the grant must be returned.

Applications for the Auxiliary grant should be returned by May 1 to HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital, c/o Scholarship Chairperson, PO Box 99, Breese, IL 62230. Recipients will be notified by the end of May and grants will be presented at the Auxiliary’s annual meeting in June.

Nancy Renschen serves as Auxiliary Scholarship Committee chair. Funds come from a variety of sources including individual donations, memorials, the Lights for Scholarship mailing and the annual walk-a-thon in September.

IHA Scholarships

IHREF scholarships are given on an academic year based on the student’s scholastic achievement, financial need and availability of funds. Selection is made in June; only recipients will be notified.

This award will be applied toward tuition, fees or books and sent to the authorities as designated by the recipient. If the recipient leaves school while the award is in effect, funds must be returned commensurate with the school year remaining.

Those applying are encouraged to read the application carefully and provide all requested information.

To be eligible, the applicant must be an Illinois resident and accepted into or currently enrolled in a hospital-related health care professional curriculum. Applicants enrolled in an associate degree or hospital-based program will be considered his or her first year; students having less than one academic year remaining until graduation are not eligible.

The school attending need not be an Illinois institution but must be accredited or recognized as an approved program by the appropriate agencies.

To be competitive, a grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 or 4.5 out of 5.0 is necessary.

Completed applications and references must reach the IHREF, 1151 East Warrenville Road, PO Box 3015, Naperville, IL 60566 by Sunday, April 15. Questions can be referred to Renna Lemberis at 630-276-5498 or rlemberis@team-iha.org.
