Hospital announces August 23 Walk With a… Dietitian at the HealthPlex

HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital Breese will host the monthly Walk With a Doc program on Wednesday, August 23, from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. on the indoor walking track at the air-conditioned HealthPlex. Instead of a doctor, the hospital’s inpatient dietitian Angela Kruse, MS, RD, LDN, will lead with a short program and answer questions along the way. Attendees at the overwhelmingly successful July program were polled for topic suggestions. The request was made for a “Walk With a Dietitian” in August, to discuss nutrition.

“Before the walk, I will give a brief talk on nutrition labels.” said dietitian Angela Kruse. “The key information is all there to help you choose healthier options – you just have to know where to look and to understand what you are looking for. Join me at the HealthPlex, and don’t hesitate to bring general nutrition questions to discuss with the group as we walk.”

Walk With a Doc is a national non-profit organization whose mission is to encourage healthy physical activity in people of all ages, and reverse the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle in order to improve the health and well-being of the country.

Dr. Brian Klostermann, family and sports medicine physician with Clinton County Rural Health, encourages anyone in the community to join the walk. This is a FREE program and pre-registration is not required.

Why walk? “There’s no question that increasing exercise, even moderately, reduces the risks of many diseases, including coronary heart disease, breast and colon cancer and Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr. Klostermann. “Research has even shown that you could gain two hours of life for each hour that you exercise regularly.”

According to the American Heart Association, walking as little as 30 minutes a day can provide these benefits, as well:
  • Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
  • Help maintain a healthy body weight and lower the risk of obesity
  • Enhance mental well-being
  • Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
The HealthPlex, which houses the hospital’s Rehab and Senior Renewal programs, as well as the Clinton County YMCA, is a quarter mile north of the hospital on Walnut Street/Jamestown Road. Parking is located in front of the building.
