Women undergoing cancer treatment invited to Look Good Feel Better the evening of April 12

A free, fun, event for women undergoing cancer treatment, (no matter the facility), will be hosted in the HealthPlex Conference Room on Wednesday, April 12, by HSHS St. Joseph Hospital Breese. The session will take place from 6 to 8 p.m., and will be followed by a trip to the Cancer Care Closet for those wishing to select from the hundreds of free wigs, scarves and hats available.

Known as “Look Good-Feel Better,” the program is provided by the American Cancer Society (ACS) with the Personal Care Products Council Foundation and Professional Beauty/National Cosmetology Associations. It was created to help women combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Those attending the two-hour session receive a makeover led by cosmetology professionals with specialized ACS training.

Even if cosmetics are rarely worn, the suggestions offered can be helpful. Participants receive makeup kits, the opportunity to meet others going through similar experiences, refreshments, gifts and encouragement.

“When cancer strikes, a woman has to deal with the physical and emotional trauma plus the effects of treatment on her skin, hair, nails and general appearance,” said an ACS representative. “Winning the battle to retain her physical appearance and self-esteem can make the war against cancer seem a little easier. This program has been called an emotional lifesaver.”

Breese program host Kathy Timmermann describes the evening, “Some women come in to the room looking drained, sad or defeated, but everyone leaves with a huge smile. A few hours of pampering, learning, and sharing personal stories with others who understand and care can be a huge morale boost.”

To attend, registration is due by noon on April 10. For more information or to register, please contact Timmermann at 526-5672 or kathy.timmermann@hshs.org.
